I am really think about learning it forever! And is it possible to teach yourself? Would it be very hard?
Depends on a few things:
(1) Your finger speed, memory, and musical thought-processes
(2) The genre of music you want to play. Pop music is really easy...Country music can be a little harder...Rock is hard because the musicians spent time developing their music for showing off....Metal is hard and frustrating because it's really fast paced and melodic (but doesn't usually depend upon music theory), Jazz music....is like where did this come from??! You better open your theory books. Gospel music isn't that hard...because it's intended to be duplicated as simple praise to God. However, their are sub-genres of music
(3) Then you have to memorize and be able to recognize certain rhythms, root (base) notes, and tonal/semi-tonal differences between if a pattern descends down toward the tuning pegs of the neck or ascends up towards the higher notes.
(4) You need to memorize keys of music: "Figure out what a progression of chords known as 1,5,6,4 means........This is usually noted as I,V,VI,IV
Learning songs by ear can be very rewarding but also frustrating. I suggest that you download "Audacity" and use it to--listen carefully-
(A) open a song
(B) slow the "tempo of the song"
(C) Amplify the song
(D) Remove the vocals from your slowed down version of the song
Play along...and then pick it up to pace....watch tutorial videos on youtube as well
Oh, and you better know "bar chords." You can't escape them.

For the chords, Google the name of the song (best done in "quotes") and put the word chords. Some have a lot of pop-ups so have your pop up blocker on. If you find a website with chords on it you like, try all your different songs.
